Hampton Daily Press; Hampton VA; 2001-10-20 Mary Greene Lake, 72, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001. A native of Bryson City, N.C., she had been a Peninsula resident for 55 years. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary Post 176. She worked at Wellworth Cleaners as a clerk for more than 15 years. Survivors include her children and grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Franklin of Newport News, and her children, Zachary and Dylan, William B. Karnes Jr. of Gloucester, and his children, Bryant and Angela, Garland F. Karnes of Gloucester, and his daughter, Kelly, and Bobby C. Karnes of Afton Mountain, and his children, W. B. and Julia; one sister, Katie Lee of Florida; one brother, Dee Greene, of Bryson City; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, Harry D. Lake and William D. Karnes Sr., and a daughter, Melissa Kay Karnes. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in W.J. Smith and Son Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in the chapel of W.J. Smith and Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
