The Chronicle Herald Thursday, January 27, 2011 Volume 62 Number 22 Halifax NS Canada MURPHY, Mildred "Millie" - It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Mildred Hewitt Murphy, 85, formerly of Coxheath on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, in Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney. Born in Whitney Pier, she was the daughter of the late Heber and Hattie (Hewitt) Lake. Millie was a member of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. In 1945, she attended Nova Scotia Normal College in Truro. Millie taught at Whitney Pier Elementary and Coxheath Elementary until 1961, when she chose to stay at home and raise her family. She was a member of the IODE and the Riverview Y's Menettes. Surviving are her loving and devoted husband of 60 years, Samuel; daughters, Mary Ellen (Vincent) Strautmanis, New York; and Joan (Terry) Haliburton, Antigonish; brother, Howie (Aggie), Coxheath; grandchildren, Alexa, Max, Olivia, Claire, Oskar, Sophia Strautmanis, Luke and Chelsea Haliburton. Millie was predeceased by her brother, Roger. Visitation will take place in Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday 7-9 p.m. A celebration of Millie's life will be held Saturday 11 a.m. in United Protestant Church of Sydney River, with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment in Alfred Smith Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of one's choice.
