Published in the North County Times on 7/27/2008 Temecula CA Nancy Eugenia Dunbar, 74 SOLANA BEACH -- Nancy Eugenia Dunbar, a loving, caring and devoted mother and grandmother, passed away very early on the morning of Thursday, July 17, 2008, with her youngest daughter, Michelle in close attendance, and the rest of her immediate family sleeping close by. Her death at her home in Solana Beach followed a year long battle with colon cancer. A premature, surprise Christmas present, she was born on December 24, 1933 to Benjamin T. Lake and Madelyn G. Alles Lake in Milwaukee, Wis. A member of Job's Daughters and later Eastern Star, Nancy graduated from Bay View High School, where she excelled at baton twirling and swimming. She attended the University of Wisconsin for one year before moving to Memphis, Tenn. with her family. Accepting a blind date with naval aviator Lt. Vance O. Dunbar, also from Milwaukee, and dressed as a vampiress to his were-wolf, she attended an October 1958 Halloween party at NAS Memphis. Bit by love at first sight, they were married the following June. Embracing the role of navy wife, she enjoyed entertaining, bridge, bowling, tennis and skiing, while doting on her children. During their military travels, two were born in Milwaukee, while her husband was deployed, one in Maryland, and one at Camp Zama, Japan. Her involvement in her children's activities included serving as Girl Scout troop leader. She is survived by her husband of 49 years Vance;, her daughters,Jeanne M. Nichols of Yucca Valley, Kathleen A. Newsome of Big Bear, and Michelle L. Vogel of Rancho Bernardo; and her son, Peter V. Dunbar of Solana Beach. She is also survived by her mother, (94); brother, Larry Lake of Franksville, Wis.; and two sisters, Kathleen Sielen of Waukeshau,Wiss., and Pamela Seaburg of Milwaukee. Nancy became an excellent and adventurous cook and meticulous hostess. It was her wish that her passing be celebrated with a memorial service/picnic now scheduled at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 2.
