Victoria Times Colonist; Victoria BC Canada; 2005-3-29 LAKE, Richard Lancelot With deep sorrow and regret the family announces the death of Dick Lake. Born September 18, 1918, Dick died on March 24, 2005. Dick was known and loved for his 'punishing' sense of humour, his gentle generosity and his quiet strength. He adored his wife, loved his family, was loyal to his friends, and was never happier than when entertaining at home or puttering around the property. An aeronautical engineer, who launched his career in the fledging B.C. airline industry after the war, Dick retired with his wife Betty to Ardmore, North Saanich, 25 years ago. Survived by his wife of 58 years and best friend, Frances Elizabeth (Betty); daughter Liz (Michael) Graham, son Peter of Queen Charlotte City; granddaughters Christina Harris (Kathryn Saunders) and Janna Harris in England; step grandchildren Angus Graham in Korea and Flora Graham in England; sisters-in-law Valerie Lake and Alison (Pete) Newcomb of California. He was beloved Uncle Dickon to his nieces and nephews in Canada, the U.S. and Australia. Dick was predeceased by his parents, Sir Richard and Lady Lake, and siblings, Harry, John, Kitty (Braden) and Lance. Born at Government House in Regina when his father was lieutenant-governor of Saskatchewan, Dick graduated from Shawnigan Lake School -- where he was a scrappy rugby player -- at the age of 15, attended Victoria College at Craigdarroch Castle -- where he enjoyed a spirited social life -- and then moved to England for his studies in aeronautical engineering. A veteran of the Canadian Merchant Navy, he joined Queen Charlotte Airlines as employee number three. In 1954 he transferred to Pacific Western airlines and worked in Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary retiring as senior vice-president in 1979 Memorial service at Holy Trinity Anglican Church (Mills Rd. and West Saanich Rd.) on Tuesday April 19, at 2:00 p.m. The family is appreciative of the personal care shown to Dick in his final illness by the staff of Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Flowers gratefully declined in favour of a donation to a charity of your choice. Condolences my be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com
