Baltimore Sun; Baltimore MD; 2001-12-2 Robert Hess Lake, 77, personnel director Robert Hess Lake, a longtime program director in the Westinghouse Electric Corp. personnel department, died Friday of heart failure at Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center & Hospital after recent brain surgery. He was 77 and lived in Towson. Born in Baltimore, Mr. Lake graduated from Towson High School in 1942, then enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific from 1942 to 1946 as a pharmacist's mate. In 1947, he married Betty Marie Lott, who survives him. Mr. Lake earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Baltimore in 1950. He worked as personnel director at Koppers Co. before joining the personnel department at Westinghouse in Linthicum in 1952. For many years he was its director of employee-assistance programs, the position he held when he retired in 1989. Mr. Lake also taught business administration at Essex Community College, Baltimore College of Commerce, and at the U.S. Naval Academy through a program with George Washington University. He served on the advisory board of the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital and was a member of the Voluntary Council of Baltimore City, which raised money for programs in the city schools. He helped to establish alcohol- and drug-treatment programs in Maryland. Mr. Lake was a master model-ship builder, whose clipper ships, skipjacks and crab boats are in collections around the nation. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, 40 Burke Ave. in Towson. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Claudia Lake Blaize of Towson and Deborah Paige Lake of Parkville; three sons, Robert H. Lake Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., Douglas M. Lake of Baltimore and Todd J. Lake of York, Pa.; a brother, Paul S. Lake Jr. of Harford County, and five grandchildren. The family suggested memorial contributions be made to First Lutheran Church.
