The Derrick; Oil City PA; 2001-1-17 Rodney W. "Bill" Lake, 77, of 402 S. Drake St., Titusville, died at 11 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Titusville Area Hospital shortly after his arrival there. Born Feb. 18, 1923, in Franklin, he was a son of Harry W. and Mary Gertrude Smith Lake. He was a 1941 graduate of Franklin High School. Mr. Lake was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army with Company C 159th Engineer Combat Battalion. He entered the service May 26, 1943, in Erie and was honorably discharged with the rank of private first class Nov. 5, 1945, at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation. Following his discharge, Mr. Lake was employed as a store manager by Firestone Rubber Co. in New Castle and Weirton, W.Va. Mr. Lake settled in Titusville in 1958 and opened Lake's Dairy Isle, at the corner of Spring and Monroe streets. He also worked for Shaw Tool & Die Industries and last was employed by J & A Tool Co., retiring in 1986. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Titusville, where he served as a trustee and deacon and assisted with custodial duties. Mr. Lake's main interest was taking care of his lawn and gardening. He also enjoyed roller skating, bicycling, hunting and fishing. He was married in Erie on March 27, 1948, to the former Leta June Shouey, who survives. Also surviving are two sons and their wives, Rodney B. and Susan Lake of Titusville and Guy H. and Tina Lake of Cooperstown; one daughter, Miss Barbara K. Lake of Titusville; four grandchildren, Mrs. Benjamin (Aimee) Shaw of Marion, Ind., Benjamin Lake of Titusville and Shannon Lake and Lance Lake, both of Cooperstown; and one great-granddaughter, Hali Elizabeth Lake. He also is survived by one brother and his wife, Denton E. and Beverly Lake of Franklin. Mr. and Mrs. Lake hosted an AFS student, Marta Bustos Zauala of Santiago, Chile, from 1970 to 1971. Mr. Lake was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, James Rodney Lake; and two brothers, James A. Lake and Reverdy D. Lake. David Lake, pastor of Greenock United Methodist Church in McKeesport, nephew of Mr. Lake, officiating. Interment will be in Congress Hill, Franklin.
