Shirley L. Thorne, 69, of Taylors, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005,
at St. Francis Hospital.  She was born in Washington, D.C., the daughter
of Arthur B. and Margaret G. Lakin. She was a homemaker and was employed
as a librarian's assistant at the Taylors branch of the Greenville County
Library. During the 1980s she organized and was president of the Ice
Skating Club of Greenville, a group of dedicated skating enthusiasts who
are greatly responsible for bringing ice skating to Greenville and for
the development of the Pavilion ice skating rink.  She is survived by
her husband, Dr. Charles H. Thorne Jr.; three sons, Charles W. and wife,
Michelle, of Minneapolis, Minn., James E. and wife, Janice, of Charleston,
S.C., and John M. of Taylors; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Visitation will be Saturday at Woodlawn Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to
noon, with memorial service to follow at noon in the chapel.  In lieu
