The son of a Pennsylvania coal miner, Lake earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy and chemistry at Temple University. He served in the Army during World War II, attaining the rank of major. Lake joined the Indianapolis-based drug company in 1946 as a salesman and served on the board of directors from 1965 to 1989. He was president of the company from 1973 to 1976.
