23 October 1913 Tonawanda News North Tonawanda, NY Farm Hand Was Drowned In Canal The body of Thomas Lake, 28 years old, a farm hand of Jeddo who walked into the Erie Canal, west of Main street in the village of Middleport Monday night and was drowned, was recovered Tuesday night by Thomas Whittaker. The later used a pike pole. The body was turned over to a Middleport undertaker. The deceased leaves a mother to survive. James Housie, a cooper, saw Lake walk past his shop Monday night about 6:45 o'clock. Shortly afterward he heard a splash and a man scream for help. He could see nothing in the darkness and was therefore unable to render any assistance. Coroner J. Glen Ernest of Gasport was called to issue the death certificate.
