Tonawanda News; North Tonawanda NY; 1973-7-9 9 July 1973 Tonawanda News Cause sought for death of Veronica Lake Burlington, VT (UPI) - A medical examiner will conduct a routine examination today of the body of Veronica Lake, the sultry blonde actress of the 1940s who died Saturday, her manager said. William Roos, who once managed Miss Lake's career, said he expected the funeral arrangements to be finalized after the examination. Miss Lake died in a hospital here of acute hepatitis at the age of 51. Miss Lake skyrocketed from playing bit parts to stardom in the early 1940s, playing in such movies as "This Gun For Hire" and "Sullivan's Travels," but her box office vanished less than 10 years later. Often sinking into near poverty, she once worked in a factory pasting flowers on lingerie hangars and another time became a waitress in a New York bar and grill. Miss Lake, whose trademark became her long blonde hair twisted over her right eye, was a favorite of American servicemen fighting on the foreign fronts of World War II. Her picture decorated countless barracks from Europe to Asia.
