LAKE, Willett Ranney Jr "Bill" June 27, 1927 - Jan. 04, 2012 Bill Lake passed away in Northridge, Calif., surrounded by his family after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Denver, Colo., and moved to Lake Oswego with his family in 1930. He attended Lakeside Prep of Seattle, served in the U.S. Coast Guard and graduated from University of Oregon in 1950. At Oregon, he majored in business and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. In 1950, Bill married Janet Lee Morrison of Portland, where they raised their four children. Bill joined his father at Mail-Well Envelope Company and began a long career in the paper and packaging industry. He became Chairman of the company in the early 1960s and took the company public as Pak-Well Paper Corporation in 1966. The company was sold to Great Northern Nekoosa Corporation in 1975. After the sale, Mr. Lake began to assemble a new business enterprise, acquiring pioneer Gift Wrap in Los Angeles in 1980 and merging with Bonita Packaging of Tigard, in 1992. The company continued to grow, eventually combining operation in Tigard and Winnipeg, Canada as North American Packaging Group. Mr. Lake served as Chairman of the Board until his death. Bill was deeply committed to philanthropic pursuits. He served as Chairman and board member of the Northridge Hospital Medical Center Foundation, was an active member of Rotary International and a longtime contributor to the Oregon Duck Athletic Fund. He also supported an athletic scholarship established by his father for Business Administration students at the U of O. Countless people benefited from Bill's generous heart. He was especially happy in the role of sponsoring the educational ambitions of two families from Kenya, Africa for over 30 years. Socially Bill enjoyed his memberships at Waverly Country Club and the University Club of Portland, and Porter Valley Country Club in Northridge, Calif. past memberships included the Multnomah Athletic Club and the Arlington Club of Portland. With his wife Dorothy, whom he married in 1984, he made many trips abroad and regularly attended concerts at Disney Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. Preceded in death by his parents and sister, Susan Lake Howell, Mr. Lake is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy (nee Roscoe) Cady Lake, a Portland native and graduate of Lewis & Clark College and his children Willett R. Lake III (Betsy), Tami Lake Jewett (Alan), James M. Lake (Chaylene) and John M. Lake. He also leaves behind stepsons, Mark Cady (Casey), Joe Cady (Violette), Patrick Cady (Alfonso) and Dan Cady (Lisa). In addition, he is survived by 14 grandchildren. Interment was held privately in Los Angeles, and a celebration of Bill's life will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 10:30 a.m. Granada Hills First Presbyterian Church, 10400 Zelzah Avenue, Granada Hills, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances by made to the Northridge Hospital Medical Center Foundation.
