Libby County Western News; Libby MT; 2004-11-19 William D. Lake, 70, died at his home in Libby on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004. He was born on Dec. 19, 1933, at Malta, to Evelyn and Oscar Lake. He grew up on the family farm north of town, graduated from Dodson High School in 1952, and served with the U.S. Army before beginning his profession in the water well industry. While working as a water well driller in Missoula, Bill met and married Betty Lou Iliff in 1961. In 1965 Bill and Betty moved to Libby where they started B&B Drilling and began raising a family. After Betty's death, Bill married Edna Anderson Iliff and they continued to run the family business and enjoy their large extended family. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, infant son Neil, brother Martin and sister Della. He is survived by his wife Edna at their home in Libby; sons Kevin Lake and his wife Libby and grandsons Oscar and Alex in Anchorage, Alaska; Kris and his wife Tanya and granddaughters Andrea and Margaret, also in Anchorage; stepson David Iliff and his wife Beth, Libby; stepdaughters Kimberlie McClain and her husband Kevin, Polson, and Martha Torgenrud and her husband Kevin, Polson; sisters Merle Zajaczkowski, Citrus Heights, Calif., Norma Barrett and her husband Clifford, Yuma, Ariz., and Choteau; brother Robert Lake and his wife Cleone, Roseberg, Ore., 16 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill will be remembered for a smile as big as his heart, an endless source of old jokes, and as a man whose handshake was his word.
