Date: Fri, 09 Nov 2007 11:47:06 -0500 From: Barbara Ribling Asa Lake was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. I viewed the request for pension made by his wife Chloe (Abbott) Lake. This small file has lots of information. The pension, R6087, was denied because Mrs. Lake could not ID her husband as the man named Asa Lake who served as a PVT in Vermont. She also could not prove the required length of service. Chloe Abbott married Asa Lake in Hampshire Co., VA, in September 1788. They were married by a Baptist clergyman. A list of children taken from the family record was submitted: Rachel b. Jan. 18, 1789 Lorenzo b. Jan. 2, 1790 Sarah b. May 8, 1792 John b. Nov. 29, 1793 Joseph b. April 20, 1795 Silas b. July 26, 1797 Milton b. Oct. 22, 1798 Esther b. March 5, 1800 Ira b. Dec. 30, 1801 Asa b. July 12, 1805 Lidia b. July 28, 1809 Martha b. March 30, 1813 Chloe applied for the pension in Hancock Co., OH, June 12, 1851, age 82. Asa died Aug. 8, 1848. Rachel Gillespie of Hancock Co. and Esther Bears of Seneca Co. testified on Chloe's behalf. The relationship between these women is not stated but it may be assumed that Rachel and Esther were Chloe's daughters as named in the birth records. According to Hancock Co. histories, Chloe and Asa M. Lake were among the original members of the Presbyterian Church in that county. Asa was involved in the first court case in that county when he and some others were sued for libel. The case was lost and the accuser had to pay the court costs.
